Proposition 8 in California - And Now A Word From Tim Gunn

I hope everyone's going to vote today. I'm not expecting the lines at the Brownsboro Community Center to be too long, but we'll see.

Something I've been meaning to write about is Proposition 8 in California which, if it passes, will ban gay marriage in a state where the California Supreme Court has recently legalized it.

People talk about protecting marriage and the sanctity of marriage, etc etc ad nauseum. I won't talk about the hypocrisy of this viewpoint (because surely these people believe in divorce), but I will say that I believe the protection of marriage rights means rights for all.

I know this is a Kentucky blog, but I have a lot of California readers so this one's for the left coast, ya'll.

And now a word from...

Tim Gunn

Joe Biden

Itzhak Perlman

Margaret Cho & Selene Luna

I don't understand why some of these lines have to be so long. I read that 3 hours is average and it's up to 8 hours in some places? nothing but respect for people willing to wait that long but to a dutchman it seems really weird. somebody must be screwing up somewhere.

I waited 0 minutes. There was a couple checking in when we arrived but a booth was open immediately.

Sometimes living in rural America has its benefits!

I did love how the check boxes on the form didn't line up with the candidates name, though. That was a nice touch.

There has been quite a bit of cognitive dissonance here in California. I have been over-the-moon excited about Obama from the beginning. But the Yes on 8 campaign has been out in force for some time now and it's curdling my juju. Wall to wall commercials of five year olds bringing home textbooks to their horrified parents - "today I learned a prince can marry a prince!" Oh the Horror. Somebody save the children. At first I thought it was kinda funny in its utter pathetic-ness. Of course California will not ban gay marriage - hippy socialist blue California? 'course not. Leave the bigotry to my home state of Texas.

Now I don't know. Not a day goes by I'm not stuck at an intersection - VOTE YES GOD HATES GAYS! screaming protesters on one corner. VOTE NO HONK FOR EQUALITY! screaming protesters on the opposite corner. I can't get over it. I had no idea it would be such a fight. I didn't even realize I felt this strongly about it 'til I started talking to neighbors and relatives and was shocked to learn how many people I know are against gay marriage. THere are reports of formerly close neighborhoods here, now no longer on speaking terms - lines drawn with "Vote Yes" / "Vote No" signs. I get it. I feel differently about some people I've known for a long time too.

I saw a guy wearing a "Can I Vote On Your Marriage?" t-shirt last week, and that really hit it home for me. This whole thing is disgusting. This should not be on the ballot. It's discrimination. It's against the the law. How can you write religious morality police discrimination into an entire state's constitution?! F**kers... curdling my juju I tell you...

We have here in Kentucky, unfortunately.

Which is why I have a marriage license from Massachusetts and not Kentucky.

We have here in TN, too, with an 81% majority. Thanks for reminding me I can register elsewhere. If I were to marry, I would refuse to do so here while it remains in the state constitution.

Joe Biden has said he is against gay marriage, because marriage is between a man and a woman.

I think it's rather interesting that in California, 7 out of 10 black people voted to ban gay marriage.

How come no one is commenting on that?
